Green Mountain Access DSL Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking of making the switch to High-Speed Internet Service? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions from customers thinking about making the switch.
What is DSL?
DSL is a high-speed, digital broadband technology that supports high-speed Internet connections at speeds up to 100** times faster than dial-up. DSL is installed on your existing telephone line and enables you to have an "always on" Internet connection, meaning your computer or Local Area Network can be connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and without any dialing. With high-speed DSL Internet service, you can talk on the phone while surfing the web, checking e-mail, or sending a fax - all over a single telephone line.

What do I need to get started?
DSL requires the use of a special DSL modem (like the Zhone DSL modem pictured above), as well as an Ethernet Card in your computer. Customers should use the DSL modem supplied by Green Mountain Access. This Modem will support Ethernet connections for Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Apple Macintosh computers. In addition, since DSL signals are sharing the line with regular telephone signals, a DSL micro filter must be used to block the signal so that it does not interfere with other analog devices that are sharing the same line (telephones, fax machines, Caller ID boxes, alarm systems, satellite television receivers, etc.). Not to worry, all of this equipment is provided by Green Mountain Access in your self installation kit, complete with easy to follow instructions.
Why is DSL better than dial-up?
If you are still on dial-up, DSL will drastically improve your Internet experience. With download speeds up to 100** times faster than dial-up, you can surf the web, send and receive e-mail, or download files faster than ever before. Converting to DSL will also free up your telephone line, allowing you to simultaneously use your telephone line and surve the Internet.
How can I save money on my DSL? Our DSL service is competitively priced at just $39.95* and is actually less than most cable modem services in Vermont. unlike a dial-up connection, you will not incur per minute charges while connected to the Internet via your DSL connection. You can also save more on your DSL by subscribing to a Clearly Connected Bundle, or to Green Mountain Long Distance Service.
